What is agentic ERP?
An agentic ERP is an enterprise resource planning system in which AI agents perform back-office work directly inside the system of record, rather than a conventional ERP with a chatbot attached. In a traditional ERP, a person reads a document, decides what it means, and types the result into a form. In an agentic ERP, an agent does the reading, matching and drafting, and writes a draft record — a quote, a purchase proposal, a customer update — into the same tables and audit trail the humans use. The defining constraint is that agents draft; they do not commit. Business-critical outputs stop at an approval gate until a person with the right role accepts, edits or rejects them, and the audit log records whether each change was made by a human or by an agent. An agentic ERP is therefore judged on its controls as much as on its automation.
Agentic ERP vs traditional ERP
| Traditional ERP | ERP + chatbot | Agentic ERP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who reads the inbound document | A person | A person | An agent |
| Who prepares the record | A person types it | A person types it | An agent drafts it |
| What the AI can change | Nothing | Nothing — it answers questions about data | Drafts only, never a committed record |
| Approval | Workflow on human-entered data | Unchanged | A gate the agent run stops at |
| Audit trail | Records the user | Records the user | Records human vs agent actor per change |
What makes an ERP "agentic" rather than "AI-powered"
Agents write into the system of record
An assistant that summarises a screen changes nothing. An agent that creates a draft quote, attached to the right customer, with a cost sheet behind it, has done the work. The test is whether the output lands as a real record with a real identifier, not as chat text a person then re-types.
Drafting and committing are separated
Every AI-produced field is a draft until a human releases it. Once a person edits a record, that record is locked against later AI overwrite, so a correction is not quietly undone by the next run.
Runs are durable
An agent run that is waiting for an approval may wait for days. Its state is checkpointed, so a restart, deploy or crash does not lose the pending work or silently re-run the earlier steps.
The audit trail distinguishes actors
Every mutation records whether the actor was a person or an agent, and which agent run produced it. Without that attribution, "the ERP did it" is unanswerable, and neither an auditor nor an operations lead can reconstruct what happened.
What sits inside an agentic ERP
Agentic ERP by WorkAgents AI covers customers and CRM, vendors, a product master, RFQs, cost sheets, versioned quotes, and inventory with stock batches carrying batch numbers and expiry dates for first-expiry-first-out handling. Agents propose across those modules — a reorder proposal, a matched product, a drafted quote — and each proposal waits for an approver.
